A Different Perspective

 27th July 2022 - A Different Perspective…

Check out the first picture: have we suddenly grown longer legs, or maybe it was taken by a drone? Well, there is a story there about the drone, we have one but yet to get it flying. Anyhow, this structure behind the polytunnel has had its new strawberry shelf constructed and that is quite solid, so in order to get these pictures, Chris was standing on that shelf. So the photos are probably being taken at around the 3.7m mark.

So the first picture is looking down at the bottom section of the new plot. Where the black plastic ends is where the plot ends. The bit after is a path between the plots.

The sweetcorn plot is about half of this bottom section and there are paths at the bottom and and between that plot and the gooseberries. After this section is the black plastic (as yet undug) and we’re not sure what to do with it yet. But we have planted melons in the tyres on one half of it. The other half as yet we haven’t touched.

To the right (from where the first picture was taken), we are at the bottom left hand section of the old plot. You can see the potatoes at the bottom, the courgettes, the swede, the kale (Tree) and then the newly planted cauliflower (again, very late to the party with those).

In the next picture Desi is sitting on the terrace, drawing the Celtic Tree Knot (or something like that). From the road this is the right hand section of the old plot. It is getting quite tight on the terrace as the plants are starting to overfill the area. If you have an issue with bees and other winged insects then it might be an idea to stay away… I think we counted 7-8 bees on one Passiflora flower the other day.

Just to the right of where Desi is sitting (or towards her back) is the other terrace which we are using as a kind of work area. Cold frame, compost bins, nursery for plants etc. etc. There is also the raised bed there with all the lettuce.

The next aerial picture is the bottom right section of the old plot. Here we have the purple sprouting blocking the view of the carrots, and the fire which is in the corner. Under the net are cabbages: red, white, round and pointy.

Looking straight down from where we’re taking the pictures the additional (left over) tomato plants, with the peppers, and newly planted melons. We have some spare space to put plants in this section now.

Last Aerial photo is the top of the new plot. We have yet to map out what we are going to do with this section. At the moment we’re keeping the vegetation at bay and gradually chipping away at it. The pile of wood at the top of the picture is some harvested wood from a plot that had been given up, which we will use to create a fruit cage, that much we do know.

This was where the pictures were being taken from (see the next picture). This is now going to be filled with soil / compost and the strawberries relocated up there. The new box shelves have already found a use.

Back inside the polytunnel we have removed the lower leaves of the tomatoes so they do not get wet and develop mildew (also gives extra light to the other plants). On the other side the peppers are growing nicely and they are developing some flowers finally, there is hope yet!
