And so to finish off the work area!

1st December 2021, And so to finish off the work area!

Although the pallets which have been used as a work area have been down since the summer, they haven’t really featured in the construction work other than just storage or a place to saw / prepare things.

Now with the first picture you can see that has all changed. Was this part of the master plan? Well, let me be absolutely honest… NO… actually the cold frame was just a spontaneous addition once things began to formalise.

So here we are, plenty of pallets, nice white ones too! And a need for plenty of them to create a more luxurious work area. Very nice it looks too...

The problem when you create a lot of structures like this is:

(a) making sure we drown everything in wood preservation paint… and

(b) trying to not create nooks and crannies that the wildlife might decide to adopt as a home… I’m thinking rats here. So we will need to basically clad all around these pallets to stop our furry friends settling here.

As you can see in the next picture some cladding already done on the side, this will need to be replicated roadside and of course on the other pallet next to the compost bins.

You can see with the vertical pallets we are going to create a kind of fence between this work area and the road. We had a nice selection of pallets harvested just perfect for this job, however they were pinched…

I ask you, pallets, stolen?

5 of them…

So we will have to root around for some others now… just there were 5 that were the same, all carefully selected and perfect… now it isn’t going to be like that.

Will be nice in the spring next year with this area available to continue working on construction projects (on the dry terrace) and also as an area for planting seeds and then transferring into the now well prepared “Haven”.

We have already had some rats messing about with the pallets and gaining access to the cold frame. These little blighters will gnaw their way though anything if you give them a chance. They already started munching their way through butternut squash to get at seeds making light work of the hard plastic vegetable basket en-route.
