Construction and Nature’s project

 29th September 2021, Construction and Nature’s project

Construction continues unabated except for weather interruptions. Here we begin to see developments: let me walk you through it.

Because there is now a gaping hole along the whole length of the polytunnel on this side, created to slide the pallet support structure under the polytunnel frame, we are now keeping things in place (for now) with wood beams. Heavy enough (we hope) to sustain things if the wind gets up.

Also you can see the beginnings of the raised bed walls to the right of the decking planks. Notice the black plastic there under the decking. This is to prevent the weeds coming through should enough light filter down there. The decking itself will be a narrow path along the raised bed. "But why a path?" I hear you say. Well, all will be revealed when we get to that bit.

For now, happy with the progress, although it might have been a lot easier had we done all this excavation before the polytunnel was erected… The condensation at this time of the year means we get a good soaking every time we go inside the polytunnel!

From a front angle picture you can see how things are taking shape. We have plenty of wood these days from a range of pallets, although the wood only becomes usable once we have dismantled the pallets. Surprising how long that can take and has to be factored into these projects! The wood is free but it takes effort to reveal it.

Last picture: Nature is amazing isn’t it. This was one of the first marigolds we planted and it hasn’t disappointed all season! They are all still flowering and causing quite a buzz with the bees.
