Potatoes, and More Potatoes…

 28th March 2022, Potatoes, and More Potatoes…

Desis collecting soil now for the potato structure. The idea is that with the limited space we have, we try to grow potatoes up rather than along. So a structure first, then potatoes on the bottom and then continue to fill with soil until we have them covered, and then repeat (continue covering) up to 60cm high or so.

Here Desi is removing some of the soil that has been piled here from other places. A quizzical look because there are quite a few potatoes remaining from last year!

The second picture showing how we have managed to transform our allotment into a woodyard, or so it would seem.  This is it though, the last of the wood for the time being, but no idea how long for… more plans (requiring wood) on the horizon.

The potato framework is coming along, 3 of the 4 metre sq chambers already sorted. We are planting the potatoes and then using our bountiful soil to cover them initially.

With the next picture, we are back at the front of the plot where the cold frame and compost bins are located. Soil is all prepared and ready for planting. We have acquired a Workmate. This is a bench which folds away and was given to Chris because they spotted that he was non-stop working with wood on the allotment. Mmmm just in time to catch the end of the woodwork. No not really but, it could have been earlier too… Plants doing pretty good in the cold frame, and plenty more being germinated at home which will be transferred down here in due course.

The next picture sees us down at the bottom of the plot. A closer inspection of the potato area.

Check out the relocated Purple Sprouting Broccoli under the white netting. At first the pigeons had a go, then the slugs took their turn. They managed to take out one plant, but the rest look like they will pull through. Purple Sprouting Broccoli back on the menu, further into spring.
