Still Getting Ready for Planting

22nd/23rd March 2022, Still Getting Ready for Planting

We were given a few sheets of this corrugated plastic sheeting but in the February all but one got decimated, first by being blow about and some of them ended on the road, but then also by people just driving over them rather than taking them off the road.

Anyway, the one that was salvaged was put to good use as Chris built a frame around it. Now we are able to use this as a cloche. What this Cloche does is it offers additional heat and gives the plants underneath some protection from the elements so these plants have a better start, in situ. The Cloche has been designed to fit nicely over the raised bed as shown here in the first picture, but is equally useful on one of the beds to boost the heat of the sun in the early Spring season.

Notice also that the brown pipe has been laid down where we want the water relocated to… it has not been fixed here yet, just showing us what it will look like, and getting the length right.

Desi taking a well earned rest on the terrace in the rather pleasant spring sunshine. This is 5pm and the sun is still quite high! This will be 6pm next week as the clocks go forward into the British Summer Time GMT+1

Back around the front of the plot again… Can you see anything different? The water standpipe has disappeared. Well not exactly "disappeared", removed, more like. A new pipe has been fitted… More on that later…

There is a new plant in the bed here at the front. This I believe is something we have found, not sure whether anything will come of it, however more to come in this area shortly. We have also tidied the entrance to the plot and now you don’t have to avoid the water standpipe. Glad to get the water back on, as it has been quite nice weather and things are beginning to dry out (if you can believe that!)

We have reserved a corner of this newly levelled plot to house the relocated Chard. But also Desi dug up some winter/spring hardy green vegetables that taste about like rocket (it’s a bit peppery) from the plot that caught fire a couple of months back. She noticed they began to grow, and that plot is yet to be allocated… so "waste not, want not", as my father used to say.
