More Landscaping, Construction and Preparation

21st March 2022, More Landscaping, Construction and Preparation

The weather is warming up. Just 3 weeks into Spring (and the beginning of the New Astrological Year) but the ground is drying out now, and we’re actually looking forward to the warm water being switched back on now.

The composting bins now sporting their brand new "drainage pipe" look, and a temporary yellow bucket just in case we get some rain. As you ca see the last and final part of sorting out the compost bins is still to do and we have been collecting bottles for use as part of the idea of sealing off the polytunnel against rats. We will be using these bottles when we start work on the rear section where we have dug out the soil. The compost bins' lids are on a slight slant so that we can harvest some water at least from the flat surface.

Another very sunny picture of the front of the compost bins, showing the finished plinths and the drainage setup. The ground is pretty much sorted for the front of the plot now, the bare soil here next to the road has Horseradish growing and will serve as a bush next to the road during the summer, autumn, so we’re pretty much done here.

Now the 3rd plot is pretty much complete. We have been tidying the pallets away onto other plots, so that we can level the ground ready to install a decorative fence to divide the vegetable area from our recreational area. 21st March T-Shirt weather… not bad!

The next picture is giving a wider perspective of the plot and showing how the plot has come along in the 18 months since it was just a fat bit of ground. We’re looking forward to the summer and seeing all these new features / functions we have built coming into proper use.

A full frontal snap of the compost bins. Now we have removed the weights on the top as we have installed hinges to enable us to easily access the bins and then shut them tight. We're so close to finishing the compost bins now… One more part to do is attaching them to the construction at the rear of the polytunnel (yet to be built) and adjoining to the raised bed in some way to fill up that gap there - through which you can see the neighbours have made a token effort to begin cultivating the plot… Our hopes of getting this additional plot are fading, should that work continue…

The final picture is showing that we have cleared all the pallets from the 3rd plot, and located them around the plot. This is one of the problems: we have to keep shifting pallets from place to place! But they are reducing in number now, as we get closer to finishing the main construction activities.
