Getting Ready for Planting

17th/19th March 2022, Getting Ready for Planting

1st picture, take a look at the work area that has now been just about completed. By swivelling the top of the cold frame around we can create a fairly decent work area, and then by utilising an old office desk top we can make this into a “potting” area. Accompanied by a built in seat, here we can set ourselves up for a session of potting on without getting overly tired. Then the results can be moved to the polytunnel or the cold frame for hardening up ready for planting out later in the season.

The plot front is now almost ready for the sweet peas, perhaps some primroses, and maybe bulbs next year, I think we’ve missed that for this year already. Once the water stand-pipe post is moved, we will be able to begin the work of preparing this pathway, ready for sowing grass in the Autumn.

In the 3rd picture, we have now installed 3 of the 4 pallets around the compost area, and installed all the wooden plinths for the green planters which will also be used for sweet peas we will grow around/along the compost bins.

A sneak peak into the cold frame. We have now installed a fairly sturdy floor. An invasion of rats meant that we needed to take everything out, seal up with stones the holes where they came in through the pallets and plastic to the side and floor, and then screw quite hard-wearing wood down to keep it all together. Hopefully they will not return. Then all reassembled and job done.
