The foundations for what?

28th October 2021, The foundations for what?

Progress continues…

On top of the stones, plastic bags and pallets goes a layer of sand, then a layer of woodchip… What on earth could this be?

The broad beans are now sown into the raised bed. We are trying out sowing before Christmas. What brought this on was two self-set beans that just began growing of their own volition, between the flowers. So in light of that, we put some other beans in and hey presto up they came, germinated and so here is a good spot to put them in. Support around them, a little sheltered and freshly prepared soil, lets see what happens next!

In the next picture: two pallets which were the wrong shape to do much with and slightly damaged too, and, the planks a little thin for much else. Here they are perfect, which is what we’ve often found. There is pretty much a use for everything, keep it and at some point that use will reveal itself (well, it has proved to be true for us).

So we, kind-of, have a well drained base floor idea here now. Even though this might all seem to have been a very elaborate plan, I can assure you it has been nothing of the sort. We have just stumbled from one thing to another with a list of things to do, and they have kind of presented themselves. The over arching idea was to build things to support growing food all based on what my father used to have in his garden to support what he was doing:

Well-worked soil for crops, a fire to burn allotment rubbish, a polytunnel to get things going earlier in the season, compost heaps to turn old crops into nutrients to put back in the soil, a rest area, seating, raised beds, and now… a “*********” to prepare plants for planting out.

Although we never really took a huge interest in what our fathers were “up to” in their respective gardens, it turns out we absorbed a lot. More to follow as we approach November 2021.
