Wood chip path, and next project

27th October 2021, Wood chip path, and next project!

In this first picture, the next project reveals itself. This piece of land around 70cm wide and 2.5 metres long resides between the decking and the work area where all the pallets / wood are currently stored.  As you can see, I have already begun to lay the foundations. We have stones going on and wood chip followed by empty plastic bags from sand and stone aggregate - this will provide us with some defense once again against weeds. The base is a more loosely assembled collection of pallet bits.

The whole area here between the polytunnel and the Horseradish (next to the road), with the exception of the compost bins, has all had some kind of weed prevention implemented. The raised bed hasn’t either, where the soil is, to allow for worms to continue to work the bed.

At the moment the compost bins lids have been secured only with heavy objects. A strong wind and the lids would be off, that is another job waiting to happen… there is no end to them!

On the other side of the polytunnel (new raised bed area) Desi has been path-building. In order to stop the wood chip from being intermingled with the soil accidentally, (we may actually choose to do this at some point), Desi has laid a wood perimeter to the soil bed. This is a little higher that the old path and so we now have about 6 inches (thickness) of wood chip which provides an aesthetically pleasing pathway, simultaneously with being good to walk on (not muddy).

In the last picture Desi stomping down the woodchip to finish off the path. Looking quite good here now!
