This is why we do it!

26th October 2021, and this is why we do it!

Look at this wonderful produce!

There of course was plenty more during the year but this is indeed a bountiful feast.

Butternut Squash

Chard

Parsley

Kale

Broccoli

Oregano

Peppers

Courgette (Yellow)

Carrots

Celeriac

There are seed pods here from radish too and beans.

When you are presented with a range of foods such as this, what springs to mind is "What can I make with this?" It’s a bit like opening the fridge door, looking at what is in there and coming up with ideas for what can be added to this to make something tasty.

Of course you can always give food away or swap for something with friendly allotment neighbours. But an abundance of fresh vegetables (often different to what is available in supermarkets) is something we can definitely get used to.

As the season progresses, we find ourselves researching an increasing range of different recipes for the same vegetables which expands our consumption of vegetables but in an ever increasing variety of ways.

It might well take a little longer to prepare the food picked on an allotment as it is from the ground and not a plastic bag, but the taste and vitamins are definitely of superior quality even though the looks might not be. There is also nothing quite like going with your produce bag and just getting your food straight from the ground, no cash desk in sight!
