2nd Terraced Plot Underway

 27th February 2022, 2nd terraced plot underway

Levelled off the 1st of the terraced plots now, and we are relocating the Purple Sprouting Broccoli from the Brassica area to their new location. Desi is digging up the plants which have been consolidating over the winter and we’re moving them into the area where the fire is.

Once they've been moved, we will be able to begin digging over the Brassica plot and completing the levelling up there. With the path down the middle of these two plots, it looks as if we might need a wooden border too, otherwise the wood chip is going to go everywhere and we don’t actually want that!

With the grass trimmed back at the bottom of the plot, the wooden terrace looks pretty tidy and hopefully will ensure we can maintain things more easily. The less work we have to do on maintenance, the more time we can spend on actually improving our use of the plot and growing things.

The patch where we grew the Runner beans this year (behind the polytunnel) needs to be “developed” in the spring. We want to secure the polytunnel from the rear and support the frame with tall wooden posts… so this is quite a big last project for the polytunnel.

Just now we need to clear the earth out. Chris will be moving the top-soil from here to help level up the second plot, no idea where the rest will be put… We shall have to see… Improvisation, once again.

In the 3rd picture you can see a pile of recently harvested wood. When we need the wood, it seems to appear! We have been very fortunate that we’ve not really bought much wood at all, it turns up as needed. I wonder if that is other people’s experience on allotments too?

The levelling up exercise on plot 2 is going well. This red/yellow swimming board is a very useful kneeler! ( A present from an allotment neighbour who is a swimming teacher.)

In the last two pictures you can see the relocated Purple Sprouting Broccoli. They look a bit dishevelled from the Winter but Spring is fast approaching so it should begin to flourish.

We are going to leave the netting off for a little while and see how things go with the Purple Sprouting Broccoli. We’ve had “greens” covered all of last season (and still are with the last of the Sprouts and Kale). Let’s see how the broccoli fares exposed like this.
