A look around the plot

21st September 2021, A look around the plot

It is already a way into Autumn at the “Haven” and a very pleasant Indian summer is going on at the moment. As you can see Desi is enjoying the terrace overseeing from her “throne” the activities going on below.

With it being Autumn the foliage on the plants is beginning to look quite tired, yellow leaves of decay now beginning to appear as the days shorten. I think we are on or around the autumn Equinox where days are the same length as nights.

There is still plenty growing though: cabbages, cauliflowers, kale, brussels sprouts, broccoli, as well as the last of the courgettes and butternut squashes. As well as runner beans! However the end of this year's harvest is in sight as the beginning of November fast approaches. Then only the winter hardy stuff will be left in, such as beetroot, and other brassicas (e.g. cabbage etc.)

The fireplace has a recent addition - an old concrete moulded wishing well has been repurposed as an extension. This type of thing normally doesn’t like the heat, so we will use it for a bit and see what happens. For now it means I can adjust the height a bit for BBQ’s, so quite handy. Notice the ripening butternut on the ground to the left of the fire.

In the polytunnel finally our aubergines threatening to deliver some harvest at last! Very late putting these in, so we will be grateful for anything at all to be honest…

The last picture gives us a view from the road. A new pallet cutting / harvesting wood area now opened up atop where the old potatoes used to be (and still are in that corner). As the Passiflora winds down its flowers, the mallow is pushing through with its pink blooms.

As of yet the marigolds have not produced flowers on the road side of the trellis. We are hopeful though. And while we have no frost, they keep growing the warmth of the sun.
