A multi purpose fence

18th December 2021, A multi purpose fence

Having now completed the terrace, the next step is to somehow fence it off from the road. What we have come up with is a multi purpose fence. On the one hand segregation from the road, on the second hand the ability to grow upwards here with the poles (harvested from another allotment). What we will be doing is putting some trellis between the poles all the way to the compost bins (and then around them) to grow some fruit on. Also the fence itself will provide a backdrop for Sweet peas, and atop the pallets will be two herb boxes.

We will also be cultivating in front of the fence some pansies and maybe some bulbs to give us a nice showing in the spring. The fence itself will provide some support for the cold frame lid once turned around, that we can use for tending to seedlings and potting on.

So the first picture gives you a good clue as to what the plans are. We dug out a couple of large boulders which we will find a use for at some point.

Notice the water pipe has been cut off and the tap removed. All of the taps were stolen. The water was switched off at the end of November and then the taps went AWOL.

In the second picture you can begin to see how the fence offers some seclusion from the road without being barriers.

The third picture shows you how things look from behind the fence. We have temporarily screwed the spare pallet to the reverse of the fence, in an attempt to prevent it disappearing while we are celebrating Christmas.

Elsewhere on the plot, Desi has spread some manure onto the raised terrace bed, and tidied up the brassica bed. The remaining small plants are purple sprouting broccoli - they should come good next spring. The taller / larger plants are Brussel sprouts which we are still picking and will be for some time to come!

In the plot in front of the terrace we have dug out the celeriac, carrots and parsnips and are just deciding what to do about the Chard (we never even planted) … maybe we leave that till the spring next year and then decide what to do with it.
