Bells and whistles, more holes and relaxing

13th October 2021, Bells and whistles, more holes and relaxing

As we power through autumn, the work on the allotment continues. Produce is still being harvested as we dig various holes around the plot.

The raised border has had some support, and some repurposed computer cable added to it. As the plants grow in this plot, there may be a need to tie them for stability, hence what we have done here.

In the second picture you can see more digging has taken place. This is giving some idea of how this section might look in due course. We haven't made up our minds yet whether this path will be grass or wood chip. It is a busy thoroughfare so maybe something a bit more resilient than grass. The Chard (that we never planted) is still growing strong to the right of the picture.

Just around the corner of the polytunnel here we have the beginnings of raised bed N2. Digging out the foundations ready to put in place the pallets which will be supporting the whole structure. More on this later.

Where is all this soil ending up that we keep digging out? Well you can see where in the 4th picture: a veritable mountain of soil is taking shape there. One of the major issues we have always had is, where do you put construction materials and soil temporarily when you are growing and building. Working space is at a premium these days as we develop more and more of the plot.

Desi enjoying a brief respite on the terrace. The other problem these days is staying seated for too long… It gets cold! Keeping busy is the answer!
