Raised beds are us!

15th October 2021, Raised beds are us!

Here she is: the raised bed now with a few more trimmings! Here we can begin to see the decking boards which are forming what is going to be a narrow pathway between the raised bed and ???  … there are now horizontal boards where the raised bed meets the polytunnel plastic. So we await whether there is anything more to do, but for now, a job done!

In the next picture we can see the the polytunnel now on wooden block stilts so that we could elevate the frame enough to easily slide the pallet infrastructure underneath. The next picture you can begin to see how the frame will be supported by the pallet.

We can’t finish these things so quickly now that the days are drawing in. Here we are packed up: a long plastic corrugated sheet providing a bit of protection as the forecast is rain (heavy buckets laden with soil or stones keeping things firmly on the ground)!

The runner beans are still going strong and plenty still to eat even at this time of the year.

In the last picture pallets in situ, joined together with a long beam of wood rested against the bottom of the polytunnel frame (outside). This is then covered with black plastic for weed prevention, under the frame, up the inside wall and then over the inside wall supports so there is no way weeds can grow around the polytunnel frame. In effect, it is shielded and wrapped with black plastic, although the borders themselves are open to the ground, bugs, worms etc. all part of keeping the maintenance task as easy as possible.

Both inside the polytunnel and outside in the borders, the work continues!
