Getting Ready (We're Always Getting Ready...)

19th April 2022, Getting ready for grass, getting ready for the new season

Getting busy at the allotment these days. The good weather is upon us this spring and those newly appointed owners of various plots are beginning to make themselves known. The plants and wildlife are beginning to gallop along now, so if you haven’t made a start already, it is uphill from here on in.

The cold frame is starting to make itself useful as you can see in the first picture. A lot of tomato plants in there but also courgettes, butternut squash and some melons.

The last plot has now been levelled. As you can see we have now removed the old path (such as it was), so now we can begin the landscaping of this final piece.

We still have some wood to dispose of otherwise we’ll be struggling for space again. I think the new plot will come in handy as a kind of dumping ground until we use all the wood up and find homes for things. Good to be finally getting this plot the way we want it, 18/19 months into the project.

The next four pictures are different aspects of the rear of the polytunnel now we have filled it with topsoil. Some of this soil has come from the front of the polytunnel and some from the new plot! One thing is for sure, the soil on this plot has been shifted around. Not sure if much of the soil is still where it was when we started!

Inside the polytunnel, although things are much tidier than they were, it is still very, very busy. Lots of young plants here amongst the paraphernalia of the allotment.

The last picture is the back of the polytunnel with the final short wall now in situ. The next task is to put a shelf on top and then this part of the internal construction is done. We can then fill in with soil and level things off.
