More Smaller Projects and Getting Ready for Growing Stuff

13th March 2022, More Smaller Projects and Getting Ready for Growing Stuff

The first picture here is one similar to others, but we've included it here again to share some updates from what is not obvious. Do you see the plot next to ours? The one with the white plastic sheeting, two poles, raised beds… It also has the square polytunnel on it… Well, we are hoping we might get this one (½) allocated to us at some point! We have made the guy who allocates the plots aware we are interested as this would be adjacent and can share the compost bins etc. We’ll have to wait and see…

Also we have got the compost bins lids weighted down. Chris is looking to put these on hinges with some locks, to secure the lids without heavy weights having to be put on/off, which will also make it easier to put the vegetation into the bins.

Next picture, right next to the compost bins we had to dig some soil away to finish off the front section and install the pallets and in doing so an idea to turn this into a step down into this area came upon us… soon to be done!

In the 3rd picture - a quick look at preparatory work going on at the foot of the compost bins, where you can see this thin flat material at the base. This is providing some stability and it's being held in place by that thick beam of wood. This area has been dug out for another innovation we are going to install around the compost bins… more in a future blog.

In the next picture - we’re still harvesting Brussel Sprouts although they are nearly finished as you can see. One is laying down there by the net. It is hard to imagine that we have only been back at the allotment 1 month and so much has happened already.

Collecting wood now for the rear of the polytunnel as the design of this section is starting to evolve in our minds.

What was a flat piece of land some 18 months ago looks very different today! It has been a lot of work and there has been mixed results, some things have worked better than others but neither of us would have missed the time and effort put in here.
