Smaller Projects and Getting Ready for Growing Stuff

12th March 2022, Smaller Projects and Getting Ready for Growing Stuff

We have begun the levelling process of the soil in the 3rd soil terrace and replanted some of the larger chard remnants from the winter. To be honest we probably need to start again now. The chard is beginning to look a little tired.

Out at the front, on the road (2nd picture), progress is being made with the roadside flower plot. More work to do here to define the area better, but we’ll be onto that in due course. Notice anything top left attached to the compost bins? Yes, there is a pallet which has been screwed vertically to the outside of the bins (hiding the plastic sheet and providing something we can grow things up). This is a little bit cosmetic, a little bit practical.

In picture no.3 you can see that we have now made a minor improvement to the raised bed. Using the horizontal wood running alongside the bed next to the polytunnel we have secured a vertical piece of wood which now creates a container in which we can place nursery pots for “growing” of small plants. 20+ of these can be housed here, and provide us with more growing space.

The 4th picture is a photo from the other side of the compost bins. You can see more clearly here how the pallet has been secured to the bins. Similar pallets will be screwed all around the compost bins. It all looks a bit of a mess at the moment, but we have plans!

Desi taking a well earned rest from the days activities on the terrace. The jury is still out on the Purple Sprouting: Will it or won’t it survive?
