23-24th September 2021, The next project taking shape
This time of the year, as already mentioned, provides ample opportunity for building work. The days are still fairly long, the weather is warm-ish, and everything still dries out.
In the first picture you can see the use of pallets to provide the foundation for the raised bed and a few other things that will begin taking shape in this section. The soil has been completely dug out, but the biggest problem here is that the wood wall which will end up being inside the polytunnel has to slide under the bottom of the polytunnel which is a metal frame. So enough earth has to be dug out to enable this to slide under it, while we still have things growing in the polytunnel! So it will be tricky! Luckily, it is still dry, otherwise this would be very messy.
Take a look at the pile of earth now moved to where the potatoes were! This was no small task (shifting soil about)! Good workout though, no need to use a gym!
The next picture gives you a landscape view of the building area. Now the pallets put in place some time ago have been revealed: quite an interesting project this one! Eventually, three practical functions will emerge here, although not too sure when it will all be finished.
We have seen some lovely sunsets this time of the year. In the summer the sun goes behind the trees to the right of where it is setting now.
In the last picture you can see the idea of how these pallets will form the base of the raised bed. Still more soil needs to be dug away under the polytunnel and the pallets all need to be joined together to give it rigidity and then it needs to be put at a 45-degree angle to slide the wall (to be built) under the plastic sheeting and into the polytunnel… This bit is quite a complicated bit of construction! Chris spent hours measuring, and working out how this is all going to work… There is a lot being squeezed into a small area and with weed proofing as well!
