All About Food And Rewards From Our Labour

18th-19th August 2022 - All About Food And Rewards From Our Labour

Look at these gorgeous tomatoes in the polytunnel! Everything is now maximising its potential as we are in the final throes of the official summer months here in the UK (June-August). September often provides a bonus month, but as the days shorten so the growth lessens.

Another excellent harvest on top of the “Harvest shelf”: tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers, runner beans, basil, coriander, and cabbage… we are truly blessed, so wonderful to eat what we have grown.

On the main tomato plot in front of the polytunnel (must give these growing areas number or names) the late summer sun is helping to ripen the tomatoes, but we believe we are seeing the first signs of blight too… all the flowers are sharing in our wonderful summer with blooms a plenty. We have placed cut grass on top of the soil in an attempt to prevent water evaporation. Not sure if it is working exactly and let’s hope grass growth isn’t hastened by this idea!

Down beyond the sweetcorn patch the butternuts are starting to fatten up. Still haven’t quite mastered the training of these plants and the cultivation of 3 butternuts per vine and 3 vines per plant, but next year I think we will be better.
