Floods (again), Produce and Preparation

15th September 2021, Floods (again), Produce and Preparation

The floods are back. Somehow the taps were turned on again, and left on. Only a kind neighbour who donned his wellington boots and turned them off, saved the day from further wasted water and flooding. Not just our tap but a few others were turned on as well… water everywhere. Just when we finished building the terrace and finishing off the furniture, this happened. Fortunately in the design of the terrace and other things water distribution / drainage has been accounted for. It's just a bit of a nuisance, that’s all. Who did it and how this happened we leave to conjecture and just get on with things we can control, our “Haven” project. No harm done.

In the next picture - more fruits of our labour. Many of these potatoes had been attacked by wire worms. We later found out that wire worms tend to be prevalent where rotting grass has been present. Well that is exactly where we planted the potatoes earlier in the year, there really wasn’t any other option. That being said, we were unaware of this linkage either.

Anyhow we dug up a good selection of them about ¾ as we are in need of the space to put piles of earth that we are digging up for the raised bed and other items (more on that later). For now a hole is required and somewhere to put the soil from the hole!

As you can see a nice bag of potatoes although there was rather less once the eaten bits were removed and the potatoes cleaned up… we are already thinking of a different strategy for next year’s potato crop.
