Flowers, food, and furniture…

 12th September 2021, Flowers, food, and furniture…

The “Haven” transition from an allotment to a garden in one fell swoop!

Here, the corner of the plot where we have created the seating area and raised bed is turning into a delightful picture these days. We planted the marigolds very late and they had a chequered existence prior to being planted out into the completed raised bed, but now they are absolutely flourishing. There are Jerusalem artichokes in the corner (provided by a friendly neighbour) which are destined for much greater heights and the pink flowers (mallow) giving us a beautiful display too against the backdrop of the green Passiflora. The lettuce are getting a bit pale but we’re eating as fast as we can too!

The bench seat is nearing finalisation (another day or two I think) but here the back has been filled in, the sides screwed on, and now it is ready for wood preserver to be painted on.

We also want to move the water standpipe to the middle of the plot, and so in anticipation of being allowed to do that, the blue pipe has been laid.

Time for a spot of lunch. It is so nice to be able to sit in comfort and lay things out on the table without balancing it all on our laps. Here, a veritable feast of tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce and peppers all from our own efforts! Homemade bread too, from Chris' bread machine. We are spoiled!

So the last few pics from another long day at the “Haven” - an almost completed bench seat.

Only one addition left to go on the front, but the seat top (decking) is on (first picture) and the side weather proofing finished. The second picture provides a good view of the top, and sides now all completed, and the last picture, the back of the bench seat all tidied up with greater protection added to the bottom.

It has been quite a lot of construction, but all in all, the trellis, raised bed, terrace, table and bench seat now all done! Not much use going to be made of them in 2021, but looking forward to making full use of them all next spring / summer.
